 The history of Flashing Heiloo International tournament (now a days VOS Rotating Open)
In 1986 the first Flashing Heiloo International Tournament took place. Thanks to the effort of a few players of Flashing Heiloo there were a lot of foreign teams, which were invited and came to Heiloo. Right away the tournament was a big success.
The funny thing is that the tournament didn’t change that much of character since that year. Important is the cosy atmosphere and the great sportsmanship during the games, but the most important is the big party on Saterdaynight. That’s why since a couple of years you can win a price at this party the PARTY POKAL. Of course we grew within our organisation. At first the teams were placed at host families, after that the competitors brought their own tents and since a couple of years we are glad we can use the clubhouse of the Scouts in Limmen (a village near by Heiloo).
Over the past years a lot of foreign teams visited our tournament. We had teams from: England, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Australia, Norway and Southern America. The majority of the foreign teams visited our tournament multiple times. There is even an English team from Doncaster, which came to Heiloo in 1986 for the first time, and competed in every tournament, since than. Since the first time they competed, their basketball results went down, but the atmosphere and cosiness is still super.
De structure of the tournament committee has changed a lot over the past years. The founders were Ellen, Jeanne, Marcel, Monique and Sonja, after that there were Robin Burgering, Andrea de Vries and Mark Zwaan, which organised a lot of tournaments. For 8 years John Kops was the driving force behind the tournaments, after a few years Ary littooy, Karen Kroone and Frédérique Rupert joined that team and since 2008 Dana Barros and Jan Ouwehand took over. All with great results, because every year there is a fun and international line up.
In the past years a lot happened concerning our tournament and the competitors. Hereby we invite you to sent us your stories, pictures, anecdotes, memories etc. etc concerning our tournament to give more information to possible future and for fun. We would also like to get in contact with teams who visited our tournament over the years.
